Dog Soldier Press was founded in October 1999 by me, John Pruit, as the vehicle under whose imprint I would publish Santana, War Chief of the Mescalero Apache, a historical manuscript edited and made ready for publication by my father, A R Pruit. I got involved late in the game, after aborted publication attempts with two other presses. In the process, I found that I enjoyed the work involved in publishing and chose to continue to publish such works as interested and/or inspired me when and if I had the financial means to do so. All Dog Soldier Press publications to date have satisfied those two criteria.

Beginning in 2018, publishing opportunities I did not have the financial means to publish as Dog Soldier Press publications made their way to my door. By this time, print-on-demand services had become available and efficient, eliminating the necessity of investing large amounts of money in inventory. With costs minimized, the authors of some of these projects had the ability to pay Dog Soldier to assist them in designing their books and preparing them for print-on-demand publication. Since that time, Dog Soldier has helped multiple authors produce beautiful art books printed on dedicated high quality presses.

Dog Soldier provides more than editing, design and publishing services. We are committed to the success of all the publications we touch. Again I have chosen to support only such works that in my own opinion deserved to be made available to the world and whose contents inspired and/or interested me. Had I been able to fund them, I would enthusiastically published all of these works as Dog Soldier publications.

I call these publications author-assisted self-published books. All books bearing the Dog Soldier imprint are subject to the same rigorous editing and design standards as Dog Soldier Press publications.
