Working with the Land, Playing in the Kitchen
This inspiring illustrated book is a collection of recipes representative of 60+ year of playing in the kitchen. From a girl of sixteen traveling in Italy to a septuagenarian transplanted from the northeast to the southwest, Gail Minton’s passion shines through these pages. Her encouragement to experiment and improvise is refreshing. Like two people she admires – classical violinist Alexander Schneider and author, activist, and violinist Helen Nearing – Gael believes a recipe is an invitation for personal creativity.
Learning the joy of gardening from her parents, Gail creates a garden wherever she lives. It is, for her, the indispensable companion or the kitchen. Spending time outdoors from March through November in Gail’s passion, feeding her mind and body. Every growing season is unique and offers surprises, whether a favorite vegetable mysteriously refusing to grow, or elk visiting the garden for a late summer night’s buffet!
Gael believes that the small-scale farm is the backbone of a healthy community. She draws inspiration from the movement that subscribes to community-supported farms and farm-supported communities. She is heartened by the knowledge that many variation of community-supported agriculture around the globe are alive and well.
Gael and Ty Minton
Gail and Ty have been gardening (and cooking) together for 54 years. Following their academic careers in Vermont at Putney School and in New Hampshire at Antioch University New England, they moved to New Mexico, Ty’s home state, where gardening is central to their lives.
